Monte Don: British Gardener Extrodinaire, SAD Sufferer

This week seems to be presenting a lot of news on SAD sufferers from across the pond.  I admit I read this article both because I like flowers and I've got Seasonal Affective Disorder.  Living in England, which is ever further north than Seattle must make winter life very difficult.  I can't say that I've ever had any hallucinations due to my depression, but what an experience.  Currently the man is working on several gardening books and TV shows.  I like his comment:

How is the SAD these days, I wonder. Don crosses one long, corduroy-trousered leg over the other and grimaces. "God, I feel like an old trouper, trotting out the same songs — the only reason to keep talking about it is that it might help someone." He says that filming in sunnier climes this last winter mitigated the blues. "Coming home from New Zealand in December I thought, no wonder I feel like I do. England is an incredibly gloomy place at this time of year, in which it is not unreasonable to be miserable." Traveling with a TV crew was also oddly helpful. "There is someone to drive me, get me to places on time, put a mug of tea in my hand. If you want to, you can retreat into a cocoon and be mollycoddled.

While I don't have the luxury of someone holding my hand during the winter, I too, keep talking about Seasonal Affective Disorder so that it might help someone else!

To Each His Own: BiAura Treatments for SAD

Biauratherapy I came across an interesting article in a Scottish newspaper this morning that talked about using Bi-Aura treatments for Seasonal Depression.  While some alternative medicines are interesting and have some therapeutic value, I always think trying them can't hurt, but they should be undertaken with a grain of salt.  If you're under medical supervision, don't stop conventional treatments without consulting your physician and it's also not a bad idea to tell them if you're exploring alternative therapies.

That being said, this sounds somewhat like Reike, an energy healing practice that does not involve hands touching the individual being worked on, but rather the practitioner moving energy around with their hands near the patient's body.

This practitioner helped one woman deal with her SAD symptoms.  The individual found some relief from a light box, but didn't feel it was enough.  I don't know if I'd try it, but if your interested, I guess it can't hurt, and worse case scenario, you're out a bit of money and some of your time.

USB Retractable Lights

Retractableusblight

I was looking for USB powered lights because I thought they might be funny.  What I didn't expect to see was something practicable.  This little gadget from Belkin plugs into the side of your computer to illuminate your keyboard if you're typing in a dark area.

It has one LED bulb.  I can't figure out how bright it is, but probably not enough to do much more than see you keyboard by.  It's just under $15 at Amazon.

The World's Longest Burning Light Bulb

107yearoldlightbulbI remember hearing stories about cross-country road trips to visit oddities: Large Paul Bunion statues, the world's largest ball of twine,  World's Tallest ketchup bottle etc. How about a trip to a light bulb that has been burning for 106 years?

No, seriously.  A light bulb in Livermore, CA has been burning since 1901.  It's been featured in numerous websites, books, national television shows, NPR and more.  The Guinness Book of World Records has verified this and Ripley's Believe it or Not wants the light bulb when, and *IF* it burns out.  No word if this will happen or not.

Address:   Fire Station #6
4550 East Ave.
Livermore, CA

Visit their web page at:  http://www.centennial bulb.orgy/index.htm

If I were up for a road trip this summer, I'd consider going and having one of the firefighters show me this little unique piece of Americana.

Outdoor Walks Are Best For Depression

Walkingoutsideisgoodforyou Most people will agree that exercise, even something as simple as walking, makes you feel better.  Walking is a key component in the Levity program  (The Levity Program helps people deal with the winter blues, or low level seasonal depression.)

An interesting study out of the University of Essex, England,  compared the benefits of a 30-minute walk in a country park with a walk in an indoor shopping center on a group of 20 members of local Mind associations.  Almost 90% of the people felt energized, less depressed, and more self assured after walking outdoors.

Some individuals also felt better after walking indoors, but a significant number actually felt more depressed.  The biggest thing out of all of this appears to be a trend towards Ecotherapy.  While I think the name is funny, anything that encourages people to get outside their artificially lit worlds and be a bit active outdoors is a good thing.

What Shape Sunglasses Do I Need?

Sun_glasses_144x144_web It's almost summer.  Some people are probably going to look for new sunglasses this summer.  For me, finding glasses that are the right shape for my face is a hit or miss proposition.  I found this neat little page over at FramesDirect.com that explains what type of faces look best with which shape lenses.

Basic descriptions are provided for oval, oblong, round, square, and triangular faces and cover both lens shape, size, and frame features.

You can also use the site to upload a picture of yourself and test different frames to see approximately what you would look like wearing the given frames. I have so far wasted too much time this morning contemplating if I look better in Oakley or  Calvin Kline sunglasses...

Are There Really So Few Resources for Summer SAD?

I've noticed a bit of a spike in my blog hits in the last few weeks.  Somehow I am listed as one of the top resources for Summer SAD via Google.  I find this hard to believe, because this blog definitely has not had a foucs on Summer SAD!  There has been a bit of a dialogue going on one of my posts for a bit now, but I'm going to try to devote a portion of this blog to Summer SAD as there doesn't seem to be a central resource that I can locate for this out there!  If anyone has info they'd like linked to, or wants to pass this around, I'd love to see the resources grow.

In the mean time, here's an excerpt from a post from a Summer SAD sufferer:

Tonight I didn't realize until 10:45pm that I hadn't eaten dinner yet. Granted, I've eaten dinner later than that before, but that's usually because of work or some other obligation, or my taking too long to cook dinner. This time it's because my appetite disappeared some time yesterday, so I completely forgot that I hadn't eaten anything.

This loss of appetite seems to happen to me every summer and in response to stressful situations. (It also happens when I'm sick. Right now all three - summer, stress, and sick - apply.)

It isn't too bad yet - I can still make myself eat something, although not much more than a piece of fruit or a cup of yogurt in the place of a meal. I remember last year one time when I lost my appetite, and eating half a piece of dried mango was all I could handle in a day.

Color-Flames on Tealights

ColorflamecandlesWow!  I totally want these.  I however, do not want 80 cartons of them, which seems to be the smallest amount that I can find them in.

They look like normal tea-lights, yet you can see the flames are a variety of colors.

The exporter's website is at http://www.glittercolor.com/Productslist.html

If anyone knows where to get these stateside, let me know!

Clean Air & Lights

Ledairpurifier OK, I have to give credit to Inhabit.com for this one.  I've been on a want-to-be gardener kick lately.  I haven't done much about it, but this little LED/Light Terrarium that uses air-purifying plans is pretty neat.  It uses a solar panel to charge, and then gives off light with the ultra-efficient LED light.

Haute Green is a design show that will be happening in New York in a few weeks that showcases high-end green products.
