The Big Round Cubatron

Cubatroninday Cubatronatnight

Well,  Light Art is always kind of neat.  Burning Man is smart, wealthy hippies (or something like that).  You add them togetehr and come up with something cool like this fully programmable light sculpture with 28 spokes, and lights that can turn on and off up to 50 times/second.

Lighting for Your Art

Every piece of art desevers to be seen.  Many light forms are known to damage paper and pigments over time.  What's an art collector to do?  Visit Fine Art Light, LLC and get lamps designed to limit the exposure to both UV and IR (infrared) wavelengths.

I've often heard about UV light hurting pigments (think about how anything left in the sun for a long period will bleach), but heat never occured to me.  Of course, thta does make a lot of sense.  I've got a halogen lamp that can almost heat up an entire room by itself and it fries bugs like there's no tomorrow.

Fine Art Light LLC will design a lighting scheme for your art, whether one piece or many.  They're hand crafted and meet museum quality standards (in fact, they've done lightings for many galleries).

Netlag: Web-Camera view of the World

This is the first animation art piece I've posted.  What appears at first as a map of the world with continents lit by electric lights becomes a series of web and video cameras from across the world set in sync with each other to mimic days, nights, and seasonal progressions.  The video will open in a new window if you click on the link.  If you have a pop-up blocker enabled, it may not work, in that case, check out http://www.plex.net .

Quotes About Light

Look at light and admire its beauty. Close your eyes, and then look again: what you saw is no longer there; and what you will see later is not yet.
-Leonardo da Vinci

We see light, not dark. But it is in the dark that we feel goblins and ghosts.
-Rex Brandt

Why is it called "after dark" when it really is "after light"?
-George Carlin

Most people would guess that the sun is fifty or a hundred times brighter than the moon, but it's a half million times brighter – evidence of the amazing capacity of our eyes to adjust to light and dark.
-James Elkins

And light has no weight,
Yet one is lifted on its flood,
Swept high,
Running up white-golden light-shafts,
As if one were as weightless as light itself –
All gold and white and light.
-Lawren Harris

I always think of shade as being full of light. That is why I like to use the word shade rather than light and shadow. Shade seems to play over the thing, envelop it, better define it, while shadow seems to fall on the thing and stain the surface with darks.
-John Sloan

There are two kinds of light – the glow that illuminates, and the glare that obscures.
-James Thurber

All sunshine makes a desert.
-Arabic proverb

Don't curse the darkness – light a candle.
-Chinese proverb

"Light Play": The Sunlight Table

A creative use of a table, fibreoptic wiring and a capturing device. 'Light Play' was winner of the "Helen Hamlyn Research Center for Inclusive Design: Design for our Future Selves" award in the design for a better working environment category.

The concept comes out of the Royal College of Art and aims to bring daylight interactions into an environment without the benefit of widows or natural light.  A panel placed outside collects sunlight and anything that may interrupt the sunlight and transports the light to the tabletop matrix dislpay.  If a bird flys by, indoor users will see the shadow of the bird on the top  of the table.

drum|head

After spending the morning looking for a picture of a glowing drum like I saw at a belly-dancing performance last night, i came across something entitle Drum|Head instead. I admit I watched the video a couple times.  Its odd and I didn't quite know what to think of it.  The artist is

You should go to this site and watch the short, quick-time video  A short description from the website:

drum|head is a cybernetic percussion instrument, a performance device. A video of a face is projected onto a polystyrene wigstand. When the wigstand is struck, the face responds appropriately and a sound is generated.

So Pretty: LED Glass Table

Ingo Maurer's Glass LED table appears to be making the blog rounds.  I'll admit when I saw this on TreeHugger, I too just had to write about it.  The glass has 248 LEDs sandwiched between layers of glass, emits light from both sides.  Conductive polymers also sandwiched in-between the glass eliminate the need for wires.  The table can be dimmed or turned off for a variety of effects and also comes in Blue and Red

Glowing Duvet

Rachel Wingfield's work combines light and science.  Imagine waking up to a gently glowing comforter and pillow just as your alarm is going off.  Actually, you don't have to imagine it because it could be your alarm.  Rachel also makes custom pillows and cushions.  They are battery powered and can be set to communicate with specific alarm clocks.
